Just released on the acclaimed NMC label, Bayan Northcott’s Fantasia for guitar is included in Music of Memory, a programme of all-British music for the instrument, performed by the young Greek soloist Antonis Hatzinikolaou. Premiered by its dedicatee David Harvey in 1982, the piece absorbs the influence of of classical fantasia principals – as exemplified in such works as Mozart’s D minor Fantasia K.397 and Beethoven’s Fantasia Op.77 – in a contemporary idiom of heightened contrasts, exploiting the guitar’s potential both for contrapuntal writing of suprising intricacy and for more dramatic, rhetorical expression.

Congratulations to Ronald Corp for the award of an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list 2012, for services to music. The richly deserved citation reflects the many ways in which ‘Ron’ has contributed to musical life in the UK, as conductor, composer and animateur. Stainer & Bell are proud to publish his major choral work And all the trumpets sounded, recently recorded on the Dutton label, the Missa San Marco, and two enchanting seasonal pieces: A Christmas Mass, available on EMI Gold, and the Three Medieval Carols.

April-2011 - The World Premiere of 'The Garden of Proserpine' by Vaughan Williams
Following on from the fabulous premier last month of A Cambridge Mass, we are thrilled to report another Vaughan Williams world premiere. The Garden of Proserpine, written between 1897 and 1899, will be performed on the last night of the English Music Festival (30 May 2011) at Dorchester Abbey by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Hill.

06-October-2009 - Hymn writer, Fred Kaan has died
Stainer & Bell mourn the death of Fred Kaan, lifelong ambassador for peace and justice, and an outstanding 20th-century hymn-writer whose bold use of language and subject-matter revitalised traditional hymnody with new force and urgency. A minister of the United Reformed Church in Britain, Fred passed away in the early hours of Sunday 4 October 2009.

26-April-2009 - Run, Mandy Run...
Stainer & Bell Production Director, Mandy Aknai completed the London Marathon in 4 hours 34 minutes. Mandy and her friend Fe raised well over £2,000 for United Response, a charity that offers a wide range of services to help people with learning difficulties to live their lives the way they choose. Well done Mandy!

Entitled Past, Present; and Future? Hymns and Songs in Christian Worship, there was a wonderful 25th anniversary celebration at Coventry Cathedral for The Pratt Green Trust, the charity set up by the hymnwriter Fred Pratt Green.
