Wesley Day - 24th May

This day so strangely changed a man,
whose heart was warmed by what he heard,
that from that moment all the world
would echo to his word.

A man so certain of his cause,
so sure of what was wrong and right,
who countered every change or chance
that might divert his sight.

A man compelled by God to preach,
to take the cause of those condemned,
to love the poor, to plead their right,
and never to be stemmed.

Ride on, through all the world, ride on
and emulate your founder's deeds,
sing out with all your heart, sing out
and meet the people's needs;

As sure and certain of your God,
as diligent in praise and prayer,
your main concern: the gospel theme,
the world your cause and care.

God bless us all who at this time
By Christ are called apart
To test in firmer fellowship
The faith that from the start
Inspired all Christian enterprise,
And warmed John Wesley's heart.
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy!

Along the trade routes of the world,
The arteries of war,
The first apostles took good news
To nations near and far:
Now science conquers time and space,
How close the nations are!
Chorus

In our one world religions meet,
And each claims special grace;
In Moslem mosque and Hindu shrine
Our neighbours pray and praise:
New forces break old barriers down
Of culture and of race.
Chorus

May God protect his people now
From fear of all things new,
And teach us to discriminate
Between the false and true;
And show us, for the gospel's sake,
What we must think and do.

Lest we forget, let young and old
In lively song recall
How great a debt we owe to her,
God's servant, Hannah Ball.

The times were hard for common folk,
And children suffered most;
But God had raised John Wesley up
To seek and save the lost.

The day he preached in Wycombe Town
Of love that conquers all,
He had to wound, before he healed,
The soul of Hannah Ball.

At last she knew her sins forgiven,
The joy of serving Christ;
And Hannah Ball, to her surprise,
Became a Methodist.

Yes, it was Hannah Ball who first,
In loving pity, sought
To gather in a Sabbath School
The children no one taught.

Her body weak, her spirit strong,
She praised, advised, reproved;
And people heeded what she said
Because they knew she loved.

May we, who follow in her steps,
Take heart, as we recall
How God most wonderfully used
His servant, Hannah Ball.

Praise the Lord for all pioneers,
All who spread Good News!
They were blind to the world's frontiers,
They were deaf to the world's abuse.
They were shipwrecked, imprisoned, betrayed,
They were faithful, though afraid:
For a work begun, for the souls they won,
Praise the Lord for all pioneers!

Each church has its pioneers:
Proudly speak their names!
What divides us disappears
In the light of our Christian aims.
When we turn back history's page,
When we claim our heritage,
We rejoice in those who obeyed Christ's call,
Praising God for his pioneers.

Praise the Lord for such pioneers:
Luther, Wesley, Booth:
For all those in two thousand years
Who recaptured gospel truth;
And for Asbury riding West,
Sharing hardship with the rest
As they opened up, in despair and hope,
A New World - and made it ours!

Praise the Lord that he leaves us free,
Free to think and explore,
To press on till we reach the sea,
Some far Californian shore.
Then, Lord, lest the good be undone,
Thrown away what others won,
Give us sense to create, not a world of hate,
But compassionate, peaceful, free.
