Alwyn, William: Sonatina for Violin and Piano

Alwyn, William: Sonatina for Violin and Piano Ref: H471

[PDF Sample]

Best known as the composer of classic film scores including The History of Mr Polly, The Winslow Boy and A Night to Remember, William Alwyn (1905-1985) also wrote symphonies, concertos and fluently idiomatic chamber music, of which this attractive Sonatina for violin and piano is a fine example.

Lasting around 12 minutes, and bearing the Alwyn hallmarks of rich, romantic harmony and vigorous, expressive line, it follows a traditional plan, opening with a flowing sonata first-movement both thoughtful and preludial in character. An introspective Adagio strikes a deeper note before a rousing finale, cast in the stirring rhythms of waltz and syncopated gigue, closes the work with a flourish.

Though premiered at the Royal Academy of Music in 1935, the Sonatina remained unpublished for 75 years, coming to wider notice in a recent recording by Madeleine Mitchell and Andrew Ball on the Naxos label. Violinists of Grades 7 to 8 standard or above will welcome this new work from the pen of an important 20th-century British composer, whose technical command of the medium will be immediately apparent.

Hayes, Morgan: Lucky's Dream. Solo Violin
Larger image...
Hayes, Morgan: Lucky's Dream. Solo Violin Ref: Y274

[PDF Sample]

Though the jagged figures and phrases of Lucky's Dream by Morgan Hayes are unmistakably those of a contemporary musical expressionist, the shadow of Bach also falls on this work, inspired by the virtuosity of the young Japanese soloist Keisuke Okazaki and his playing of the E major Partita.

In fact, though 'standard' contemporary techniques are widely used in the piece - left-hand pizzicato, harmonics and microtones, all deployed in edgy, unpredictable rhythms - there is also a classical shape to the structure. In this two-part form, lasting around four minutes, the first section is reflective, dwelling on single notes, phantoms as it were of pitches that are subtly deflected through slow glissandi. Then a spectral dance ensues, delivered largely on plucked strings, ethereal, disembodied, strange.

The 'Lucky' in question is a character from Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot, and Lucky's Dream is a complementary work to the earlier, impassioned Lucky's Speech (2006). The two items can stand alone or may be performed consecutively. Both are to be found on the recent all-Hayes CD released on the NMC label (NMC D163), which also features the composer's 17-minute Violin Concerto as further evidence for his original approach to writing for the instrument.

Hayes, Morgan: Opera for Violin and Piano
Hayes, Morgan: Opera for Violin and Piano Ref: H448

[PDF Sample]

Opera, by the leading young composer Morgan Hayes, takes its title from the 1987 film by the Italian director Dario Argento, famed for his work in the giallo horror genre. Though the story concerns a jinxed production of Verdi's opera Macbeth, the intense, highly charged music relates less to the physical action than to the prowling camerawork, abrupt jump-cutting and other techniques that contribute to the heightened melodrama uniquely characteristic of Argento's style.

Lasting about seven minutes, Opera has already been featured by several leading young violinists offering exciting new material in their recitals, and will be no less valued for its technical and interpretative challenges as a conservatoire test-piece at diploma level. A recording by Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea is due for forthcoming release on the prestigious NMC label.

Parry, Hubert: Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte Ref: MB80

Edited by Jeremy Dibble

A key figure in the so-called English Musical Renaissance, Parry was a considerable composer of chamber music. His three violin sonatas, the first of which, in d minor, is here published for the first time, along with the Fantasie-sonata and Sonata in D major, date from the 1870s and 80s, and are contemporary with his four symphonies and setting of Milton's Blest Pair of Sirens . They are fine additions to the string repertoire and will be greeted enthusiastically by violinists seeking new material for recitals. Performing editions of each sonata are available separately.

Samuel, Rhian: Shards of Light. Solo Violin Ref: Y228

[PDF Sample]

Shards of Light is dedicated to György Pauk, and is of Grade 8 to diploma standard. The contrast between its atmospheric main idea of fleet, ethereal figurations high on the E-string and more spiky and aggressive material suggests the image of its title, in music contemporary in sound yet accessible in feeling.

Like other instrumental works by Rhian Samuel, Shards of Light combines exciting instrumental virtuosity with a strongly poetic impulse, and is a most effective addition to the repertoire of new violin music, whether as an examination test-piece or as recital material.
