Nicholas Yonge: Musica Transalpina (1588) Ref: EM42

Edited by David Greer

This is the first ever complete published edition of a major madrigal collection that is essential to our understanding of the fruitful interaction of Renaissance Italian and English music.

In four, five and six voices, the 57 pieces of Musica Transalpina include 51 madrigals by Marenzio, Palestrina and others, the two parts of Byrd's 'La virginella', and four French chansons. Uniquely, the anthology also features singing translations of the original poems from the Italian into the vernacular, for which it was widely admired and circulated. As a printed source from which composers could learn the madrigal style and aesthetic, it was hugely influential in inspiring the 'golden age' of Tudor and Jacobean vocal music.

An important addition to The English Madrigalists series, Musica Transalpina of 1588 is not only of great scholarly interest but is also an outstanding addition to the repertoire that will delight contemporary singers no less than it enthralled those Elizabethans who first responded with such enthusiasm to its fine music and accessible 'Englished' texts.

SATB and Organ or Piano
[PDF Sample]

Included in the Oxford Book of Ballads and ascribed to an anonymous 15th-century author, the tale of Joly Joly Wat the shepherd who offers the infant Christ his 'pipe, skirt, tarbox and scripe' is among the best-loved of traditional Christmas verses. Its musical reference offers an obvious attraction to composers, and in Bryan Kelly's new setting a sprightly ritornello embellished with trills is the musical counterpart to the young herdsman's musical instrument on which 'he made such joy.'

Written for Simon Williams and the Harrow Choral Society, Joly Joly Wat brings a fresh and lively note to seasonal choral concerts. The vocal writing is clear and straightforward, with occasional division of the sopranos, and an incisive and syncopated style that matches the shepherd-boy's haste to leave his flock and his faithful dog keeping his 'shepe fro ye corn' in order to visit the new-born Jesus.

Canticles and Anthems with Orchestra: William CROFT (XCI) Ref: MB91

Edited by Donald Burrows

William Croft's career as the leading native-born composer of English church music was established in the period between the death of Purcell and the arrival of Handel in London. His education took place among musicians from Purcell's circle, and his style was modified by the influence of Handel's 'Utrecht' Te Deum and Jubilate of 1713. All the music in this volume was composed for various royal church services that took place between 1709 and 1720, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace and in St Paul's Cathedral. The contents include the Te Deum and Jubilate Deo, sung at the coronation of George I, and the anthems The Lord is a sun and a shield, O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his name, O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious, and Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

Nos. 4 and 7 of the Miniatures for Piano Trio arranged for Viola and Piano by Michael Lieberman
[PDF Sample]

These transcriptions of two popular pieces (Nos. 4 and 7 of the Miniatures for violin, cello and piano) make available a pair of very charming and accessible works for Frank Bridge's own instrument the viola. There are opportunities here in particular for soloists to display their powers of cantabile delivery in high and low registers, supported by a sensitive and atmospheric piano accompaniment.

The unfolding melody of the Romance conveys a graceful nostalgia suggestive of Tchaikovsky's most intimate songs and short piano pieces. In the Valse Russe a flow of melody freighted with Slavic melancholy is faultlessly imagined by this most versatile of English twentieth-century composers.

Michael Lieberman's polished translation of the Romance and Valse Russe into the new medium preserves all that is essential of the originals and adds idiomatic fingering and bowing to the viola part. These pieces, which are of around Grade V standard, are potential new material both for examinations and for the refreshment of recital programmes with authentic yet unfamiliar romantic repertoire.

A carol in the manner of Delius
SATB unaccompanied
[PDF Sample]

Though Frederick Delius was in no sense a man of traditional religious beliefs, the distinguished composer and organist Derek Healey has imagined the sound of a Christmas carol he might have written, and given us Sleep, Holy Babe!, a delightful unaccompanied SATB setting of Edward Caswall's classic hymn.

The result will delight all lovers of Delius's music, and not least those who wish to add a dash of his unique style to this year's Christmas festivities. A slow and expressive lullaby, Sleep, Holy Babe! adds a different nuance to each of the four verses, reflecting their changing moods. In turn, sopranos, tenors, basses and altos have solo roles, and together create a richly Delian sonority that stays well within the technical range of an average choir.

With Sleigh Bells across the Snow, renowned recitalist and composer of popular church music Malcolm Archer reveals another facet of his talented musicianship - namely, his love of light music and his mastery of the theatre organ.

The latest addition to Stainer & Bell's stylish Light Organ Series, Sleigh Bells across the Snow was conceived in the spirit of Leroy Anderson, and joyfully follows the tradition of his and other notable sleigh rides. Bells and chimes feature prominently, ad libitum. But as the composer himself remarks, in true theatre-organ spirit, players should also feel free to add their own embellishments, glissandi, or whatever else takes their fancy!

Christine Brown is a highly respected teacher and composer for young people, and in her Chandos Suite for violin, cello and piano she marries her wealth of practical experience in coaching elementary players in the art of chamber music with her distinctively tuneful way of writing for the three instruments. A whistful Prelude precedes a mysterious scherzo of plucked and bowed whole-tone scales. A Serenade gives all the players a chance to shine in cantabile melody before the pulsating rhythms of the final Dance bring the suite to a brilliant conclusion. The Chandos Suite is a worthy addition to Stainer & Bell's collection of classic piano trios for young musicians, including popular works by Frank Bridge, Adam Carse, Cornelius Gurlitt and Peter Martin.
