The organ voluntaries, double or cornet voluntaries and psalm-tune settings by John Blow form a substantial corpus of material - 48 pieces in all - that sheds much light on the developing keyboard style of the late 17th century. Predominantly serious and contrapuntal, they bear witness to the technical mastery of their composer and to his role as an important influence in Restoration musical life.

Blow, John: Sixteen Organ Pieces Ref: K43

This collection of sixteen pieces by John Blow (1649-1708), taken from the complete organ music published in Volume 69 of Musica Britannica, is an authoritative introduction to the work of the leading Restoration English composer of organ music. More organ music from this period is ascribed to Blow than to all his English contemporaries put together, including Henry Purcell. In compiling this anthology, the editor has incorporated both the best examples from the corpus, and those that were most popular in the composer's lifetime, while illustrating the variety of styles he used. Most of the pieces may be played on a single manual, but there are also 'double voluntaries' (for two manuals) and 'cornet voluntaries' (for two or three manuals). The collection includes advice on ornamentation and a comprehensive editorial note.

Blow stands as the dominant figure of English harpsichord composition in the late seventeenth century, the master of an individual school that merged continental influences into a vigorous native tradition of keyboard writing. There are preludes, dances and grounds in this anthology, which is selected from Volume 73 of Musica Britannica, and also includes advice on ornamentation and a comprehensive editorial note. Bull, John: Keyboard Music I Ref: MB14

Bull's skill as a composer and performer was acknowledged throughout Europe. This volume, the first of two, contains fantasias, ostinati and plainsong settings, keyboard canons, preludes and a group of 'Dorian' pieces by this intriguing and ingenious master of the virginals.
