Lemare, Edwin: Marche Moderne
Ref: H279
Although not at all 'moderne' (Lemare was born in 1865), this is a splendidly vulgar fun piece with which to treat an audience, whether after a service or as a grand finale in a recital programme. If your audience likes 'Crown Imperial' and suchlike it will enjoy this march! The opening of the main theme seems to be under the influence of Wagner but much of the rest is more original, including a marvellous introduction and an imaginative coda section reaching a second inversion of E major only five bars from the end (tonic key of E flat major)! The secondary theme is great fun - Lefubure-Wely springs to mind!

Maxim, Christopher: Toccata Nuptiale
Ref: H446
[PDF Sample]
There being no just cause or impediment to the contrary, Christopher Maxim makes a daring liaison between the music-hall ballad 'Daisy, Daisy' (on pedals) and the grand organ style of Vierne (on manuals) in his
Toccata Nuptiale
, written for the wedding of a friend whose passions include cycling. The result, which moves along way from the organ loft of Notre Dame, is a splendid addition to the repertoire of wedding music and of light-hearted concert works - and is much simpler to play than a
real
Vierne toccata!

Ogden, Nigel: An Art-Deco Three Piece Suite
Ref: H358
[PDF Sample]
Reflecting his admiration for the age of flying boats and Bakelite radios, the 'Art-Deco Suite' is an affectionate study in nostalgia - a trio of images from the 1920s and 30s set in music of timeless elegance.
The first piece 'Ritzy', speaks for itself: classy, carefree and full of elite syncopations. 'Acacia Avenue', in contrast, is a miniature tone poem, its languidly flowing melody conjuring up visions of neat suburban 'semis' and impeccably tended gardens. The unstoppable finale, 'To Clarice', pays homage to the popular Clarice Cliff ceramics of the period, superbly decorated in black, orange and lime, and now as much a collector's item as this composition has proved to be amongst lovers of stylish organ music.

Fifteen Practical Voluntaries for Church Organists.
[PDF Sample]
Easy liturgical organ music in an accessible modern style is always welcome, and Nigel Ogden, well-known contributor to Stainer & Bell's 'Light Organ' series and host of 'the Organist Entertains' on BBC Radio 2, has composed fifteen new pieces for use within the communion service or other acts of worship. They are suitable both for traditional and electronic keyboard instruments, and may be performed on single or multi-manuals, with the bass played optionally on pedals as desired. There are fanfares and festal voluntaries to accompany the dramatic high-points of the liturgy, as well as tranquil melodies for reposeful moments of meditation and private devotion, plus preludes on familiar hymns to collect the thoughts of the whole congregation. Flexibility is the watchword of
At Your Service
, which offers a really practical contribution to the repertoire of useful music for church organists.

Written to inaugurate a series of lunchtime concerts at Manchester Town Hall, one of Britain's finest examples of Victorian architecture and home of the magnificent Cavaille-Coll organ. English through and through, it opens with a short fanfare motif which helps to bind the sections together as it marches along with more than a hint of Elgar. Easy under the fingers (and feet) this is a real players piece and would suit any occasion where a little pomp and ceremony is required.

Nigel Ogden's many admirers will welcome this latest addition to the growing list of original organ music from the pen of this stylish entertainer. A lively march in military style frames a 'big tune' in E flat major, written in the grand ceremonial manner. Sounding equally fine on pipe or electronic instruments, the piece is well within the range of any player of Grade 4 standard or above, and has been recorded on the CD 'At Your Request', issued by OS Digital Recordings, performed by the composer on the Wurlitzer Organ at Stockport Town Hall.

Pachelbel, Johann: Canon in D
Ref: H447
Arranged for Organ by Nigel Ogden
Among the all-time classical favourites and an essential item in any church organist's library of service music, Pachelbel's
Canon in D
receives a fresh and original makeover in this new arrangement by the celebrated recitalist and radio host Nigel Ogden. Scored by the composer for an ensemble of three violins and bass, the piece adapts beautifully for performance on the organ. Ogden's treatment retains all the soothing, melodious character of the original masterpiece, while falling easily within the range of amateur players who are able to manage a simple pedal part.

Porter-Brown, Reginald: Tuba Tune for Organ
Ref: H395
A firm favourite in recitals for many years, yet never before published and of only medium difficulty, Tuba Tune displays both wit and pageantry in its magnificent big tune. A more lively middle section in right-hand thirds sets off the pomp and circumstance of the main theme. A master of the keyboard, Porter-Brown was among the theatre-organ's all-time greats. His legendary musicianship delighted audiences for many years, and is captured forever in this unforgettable piece.

Simper, Caleb: Seventeen Voluntaries. Book 1
Ref: 16010
A prolific composer of Victorian church music, Caleb Simper was a humble musician whose choral works sold in vast quantities, rightly deserving their publisher's accolade as being 'sung throughout the civilised world'. Born in Wiltshire in 1857, Simper was largely self-taught. He attempted a number of professions, including piano tuning, before finding his vocation as an organist. As with his choral music, of which he wrote 162 anthems under his own name and many others under the pseudonym of Edwyn A Clare, his organ voluntaries offer playable and practical music for organists of limited technical ability on two staves.

Wedding Gala (arr John Norris)
Ref: H449
Sixteen celebrated pieces for a perfect wedding. Selected and arranged for organ by John Norris
A well-known teacher and compiler of Stainer & Bell's Opera Gala series, John Norris has created Wedding Gala with an ear to giving church organists a mix of favourites and exciting discoveries to brighten the routine of music for the service of holy matrimony.
No album would be complete without the traditional wedding music of Mendelssohn and Wagner, and it can be found here in this collection alongside other classics of the wedding repertoire by Jeremiah Clarke, Bach and Handel. But there's also a thoroughly contemporary leavening, with arrangements of Sydney Carter's One More Step and Lord of the Dance, both firm favourites, plus Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Charpentier's Prelude, adding a note of splendour.
But the real bonus is for lovers of English music, with Elgar's Chanson de Matin and 'The Call' from the Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, seldom found in comparable collections. And there's also a rare new discovery: the ravishing Chosen Tune by Herbert Howells, transcribed from his Three Pieces for violin and piano, Op. 28, and available as an organ piece for the first time.
Each piece is comprehensively registered by the arranger, and the collection as a whole will be welcomed by all organists of intermediate standard as a source of new material not only for liturgical use but also for recitals.
