Price: £4.25

Bairstow, Edward C: Prelude, Elegy and Toccata-Prelude
Bairstow, Edward C: Prelude, Elegy and Toccata-Prelude Ref: H349

One of the twentieth-century's outstanding organist-composers, - 'The English César Franck'. This is a warm and romantic work in three movements which can be programmed separately but together add up to a structure of sonata dimensions. Bairstow's career spanned the whole strata of provincial musical life from choral society to music festival, and encompassed organ playing, writing, teaching, conducting, accompanying, lecturing, composing and adjudicating as well as looking after the busy musical life of York Minster where he served as Organist and Master of the Choristers from 1913 until his death in 1946.

Best, William Thomas: Concert Fantasia on a Welsh March
Best, William Thomas: Concert Fantasia on a Welsh March Ref: H295

A prolific editor and arranger for the organ, Best also composed church music, carols, glees, piano music, orchestral pieces as well as works for the organ. Major works for the 'King of Instruments' include 'Four Concert Fantasias' of which 'Fantasia on a Welsh March' is number two in the set.

Based on the Welsh tune 'Men of Harlech', it subjects the march to virtuosic treatment that makes demands on both player and instrument. It is a fine work, and worthy of inclusion in any recital programme.

Blow, John: Sixteen Organ Pieces
Blow, John: Sixteen Organ Pieces Ref: K43

Selected from Musica Britannica Volume 69. Edited by Barry Cooper.
This collection of sixteen pieces by John Blow (1649-1708), taken from the complete organ music published in Volume 69 of Musica Britannica, is an authoritative introduction to the work of the leading Restoration English composer of organ music. More organ music from this period is ascribed to Blow than to all his English contemporaries put together, including Henry Purcell. In compiling this anthology, the editor has incorporated both the best examples from the corpus, and those that were most popular in the composer's lifetime, while illustrating the variety of styles he used. Most of the pieces may be played on a single manual, but there are also 'double voluntaries' (for two manuals) and 'cornet voluntaries' (for two or three manuals). The collection includes advice on ornamentation and a comprehensive editorial note.

Transcribed for Organ by Alastair Mitchell.

A useful arrangement that will serve as a lively outgoing voluntary or as wedding material. Only two manuals are required but the music needs a reasonably sized instrument with a good solo reed on the Great for effective performance. Of only moderate difficulty, it is well worthwhile including in your repertoire.

The original is printed in score in Musica Britannica volume 13, edited Gerald Finzi.

Caldwell, John (ed). The Mulliner Book (I) Ref: MB1

Edited by John Caldwell
Of an iconic status in the historiography of British Music, The Mulliner Book is published in a completely new edition in the 60th anniversary year of Musica Britannica. A major source of 16th-century keyboard music, it is also a compilation of music for cittern and gittern, plus a short vocal piece by Mulliner himself, available for the first time complete in one volume with a detailed commentary. The collection is also of importance for the light it sheds on musical tastes and attitudes at a time when the Reformation and its consequences were becoming embedded in the national psyche.
First published in 2011.

Cocker, Norman: Four Pieces
Cocker, Norman: Four Pieces Ref: H370

Angelus; Trio; Interlude and Paean

The reissue of four pieces by Norman Cocker, celebrated organist of Manchester Cathedral in the inter-war period, further extends Stainer & Bell's library of English Cathedral music that also includes the complete solo works of Basil Harwood and pieces by Darke, Hollins and Bairstow. Detailed registrations by Henry Ley, himself a noted performer and Music Director of Eton College from 1926 to 1945, are of historical interest. Angelus, Trio and Interlude offer episodes of quiet reflection. Paean breaks the mood with flowing, euphonious counterpoint in ceremonial style.

Cocker, Norman: Tuba Tune
Cocker, Norman: Tuba Tune Ref: MO4

Probably the most famous of all Tuba Tunes. The versatility of Norman Cocker was legend. Not only was he a distinguished organist at Manchester Cathedral (see above), but also a cinema organist - often rushing from the cinema to the Cathedral and back again wearing carpet slippers! In this work, Cocker combines the grandeur of the church organ with the showmanship of the cinema organ to great effect. See also Porter-Brown.

Darke, Harold: Rhapsody, Op. 4
Darke, Harold: Rhapsody, Op. 4 Ref: H363

Reissued in 1994. Darke's Rhapsody is a flawlessly constructed work that could be used as a meditative prelude or postlude within a service, or as a separate recital item. Gently expressive harmonies and warm melodies linger in the memory with the same poety and nostalgia as Darke's masterpiece: his Christmas setting of Christina Rossetti's 'In the Bleak Midwinter'.

Hollins, Alfred: A Song of Sunshine
Hollins, Alfred: A Song of Sunshine Ref: H300

Hollins was a composer of organ music but also a virtuoso pianist and organist, despite being blind from birth. The piece is light in style, as its name suggests, but requires a fairly good manual technique and neat pedalling. A three-manual instrument is needed for really effective performance (a choir clarinet is necessary for the solo middle section). This is an attractive piece to include as a contrasting item in a recital, and would certainly be a useful addition to the repertoire of wedding music.

Hudson: Four Hymn-Tune Quodlibets for Organ Ref: H445

The linking together of familiar melodies from different sources in the form of the quodlibet has a long history. Hazel Hudson adds to that tradition with four examples that each affectionately combines a well-known hymn with a familiar song of worship. The technical level of difficulty is easy to intermediate, and the featured tunes are Bunessan and Amazing Grace, Ebenezer and Let My People Go, St Denio and Kum Ba Yah, and Cwm Rhondda and Shout for Joy.
