Bond, Christopher: Equinox for Four Euphoniums Ref: Y299

Treble Clef
Score and Parts
[PDF Sample]

Equinox was written in late 2011 as a showcase for the euphonium quartet Euphony, who gave the premiere at the opening concert of the 'Festival of Brass' at the Royal Northern College of Music in January 2012. Since then, Euphony have played the work extensively, including a performance at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in June 2012, at the Brucknerhaus Concert Hall in Linz, Austria.

The word 'equinox' is derived from the Latin aequi (equal) and nox (night). It is the name given to the twice-yearly occasion when the earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun, so that day and night are of the same duration. With this in mind I structured the work from two thematic groups, consisting of sections of equal length. The first, which is heard after a brief introduction, is marked Energico, and its character is marked by sustained, lyrical lines unfolding over an accompaniment of rapid and deftly articulated rhythmical phrases. The second section, slow and expressive, offers the strongest contrast both in mood and tempo. By a further association of ideas, this sharp distinction of material could be thought of as representing the frenzy of daytime in comparison with the tranquillity of night. In the third and final section, figures from both the preceding sections are brought together in a vigorous finale, the interplay of the four parts intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the euphonium to the full.

Equinox was the winning entry in the 2012 Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Flight, James: A Short Sonata Ref: H474

For Euphonium (Treble and Bass Clef parts provided) and Piano

[PDF Sample]

A Short Sonata is a work written at around Grade 8 standard for euphonium and piano. In each of the work’s three movements, different qualities of the instrument are utilised and explored. In the first movement, an Allegro in 6/8 time, these qualities are the instrument’s general agility, and its ability to play fast-moving melodies in a way that drives the music forward. Throughout, different ways of phrasing similar material are used to create interest and a varied sound. In the second, slow movement, the resonant and majestic way in which the euphonium can deliver lyrical melodic lines is explored. The movement is made up of four long phrases which peak dynamically at the third, giving room for interpretation and feeling. The third movement exploits the instrument’s ability to play loudly and aggressively, using lots of accented notes, hairpin crescendos and quick double-tonguing.

A Short Sonata was the winner of the first Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff in May 2010.

Standard: Intermediate

The Partita for trombone and piano is the latest example of Bryan Kelly's genius for writing bright and idiomatic miniatures for a range of instruments. From the stately opening 'Fanfare', melodious 'Song' and sombre 'Chorale Prelude' to the genial 'Burlesque', and soulful 'Envoi', no aspect of this most characterful member of the brass family is neglected. Both treble clef and bass clef parts are included with the score. The five pieces of this new Partita will be attractive to all trombonists, especially to adventurous young players of around Grades 3 to 5 standard who are keen to explore new repertoire.

Lloyd Webber, William: Northington Farm Ref: H478

Rustic Rondino for Bassoon and Piano

Standard: Intermediate
[PDF Sample]

The 'rustic rondino' Northington Farm is a charming duet for bassoon and piano, one of a number of impressions for woodwind instruments composed by William Lloyd Webber as mementos of family holidays.

Brief yet perfectly formed, this miniature rondo takes a burbling tune for a stroll via three delightful interludes where the composer's skill at musical illustration is demonstrated in deft harmonic side-slips and an accompaniment that adds to the picture of some amiable country resident of farmyard stable or sty.

Of intermediate grade, the bassoon part lies comfortably within the tenor clef, though concluding with a fruity low B flat! The piano contributes to the meander with an elegant wit entirely characteristic of the composer, whose style embraced both passionate romanticism and gentle humour with equal sincerity.

Samuel Rhian: Dovey Junction for Brass Quintet
Samuel Rhian: Dovey Junction for Brass Quintet Ref: Y224

Score and Parts
[PDF Sample]

Scenes from Welsh life and landscape are a frequent source of inspiration for the music of Rhian Samuel, and, in Dovey Junction, the joyful atmosphere of families en route to the Welsh seaside via the little west-coast railway line is the cue for a crackling scherzo for brass quintet.

A snappy rondo theme insists on dressing up in a different texture each time it returns. In between, pithy staccato phrases for trumpets are the setting for more cantabile figures from horn and trombone, and a brief and bluesy episode for muted solo trumpet suggests lazy days on the beach, or grown-up nostalgia for holidays long past. But the energy and sense of expectation remain unstoppable from the first bar to the last, and all five instruments sweep the music into a furious coda that ends the work in riotous high spirits.

Dovey Junction was written for performance by Borealis Brass (Alaska) at the UNESCO World Forum on Music, Los Angeles, USA in October 20005, at the invitation of the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica, (Rome).

Each of these three pieces takes as its starting point a particular aspect of clarinet technique - staccato articulation of repeated notes, sustained legato phrasing and rapid arpeggios respectively - and from it develops an etude that is also a fully formed character piece. The style is exhilarating, and the result a substantial contribution to this neglected instrumental genre. The Little Duos could be programmed most effectively with the Poulenc Sonata for two clarinets.

Wilson, Timothy: Avidity for Brass Quintet Ref: Y290

[PDF Sample]

Winner of the 2011 Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Timothy Wilson's Avidity is a dynamic endorsement of the competition's aim to provide exciting new brass music for schools, conservatoires and professional ensembles. Generated by the composer's skilful invention and purposeful structure, its fast-moving six-minute sonata form for brass quintet delivers the musical counterpart of the eagerness and expectancy implied by its title.

In the outer sections of Avidity strongly accented rhythms command the attention, with arresting unisono phrases balanced by effervescent staccato passages. The level of energy is sustained through unexpected rhythmic twists and turns distorting the pulse of the music, with striking crescendi and strong dynamic contrasts that are a particular strength of the brass idiom. There is respite however, with two episodes of solemn, chorale-like material whose arched lines sound no less well on the five instruments. But the last word is with the opening theme, returning with unstoppable momentum and concluding Avidity with a decisive cadence of abrupt repeated chords.
