Hayes, Morgan: Boaz
Hayes, Morgan: Boaz Ref: Y187

For flexible ensemble
[PDF Sample]

Written for players of intermediate grade, and an ideal contemporary music 'workshop piece' for Key-Stage Three music or similar educational functions, Boaz is scored for any conceivable line-up of pitched and un-pitched instruments. Improvisation, embellishment and repetition are used to create a strikingly individual movement in contemporary style, which changes uniquely at every performance. The conductor or ensemble-leader determines the length and scoring of individual sections, and the overall form of the piece, chosen from four sections of highly contrasted material. There are parts for C, Bb, Eb and F instruments, and purchase of a set of parts includes permission for additional photocopies to be made to meet the needs of the ensemble.

Hayes, Morgan: Dances on a Ground
Hayes, Morgan: Dances on a Ground Ref: Y261

Version for Clarinet in A, Violin, Violoncello, Piano and optional Double Bass

Score and parts
[PDF Sample]

The ground bass, a type of theme-and-variations much favoured by English composers from Purcell to Britten, receives a 21st-century makeover in Morgan Hayes's Dances on a Ground.

The 'ground' in this case is, appropriately, a robotic, march-like tune for cello that asserts itself in unrelenting mechanical repetitions according to the rules of the form. But among the other instruments there is little consensus about the path the music should take. Though the theme resists for a time, increasingly assaulted by their capricious flights of melody and spiky pizzicatos it abandons its stubborn resistance, is turned to fragments, then dissolves in a fierce conclusion, leaving only an outline of its former self.

Premiered in Vilnius, Lithuania, in May 2009 by the Composers Ensemble with pianist Huw Watkins, Dances on a Ground revisits an earlier work written for the Smith Quartet, and presents its material in terms of a carefully chosen instrumentation of clarinet in A, violin, cello, piano and optional double bass. The same performers gave the work's UK premiere last September, at Kings Place, London.

Hayes, Morgan: Shatner's Bassoon
Hayes, Morgan: Shatner's Bassoon Ref: Y253

Score and Parts
[PDF Sample]

For Clarinet in A, trumpet in C, trombone, piano, viola and double bass.

Satirist Chris Morris persuaded various media figures that Shatner's Bassoon was an area of the brain that controlled time perception, and that it was was targeted by the fictional drug 'cake'. Taking his cue from the musical equivalent of time extended, diminished and reviewed by means of augmentation and recapitulation, Morgan Hayes has written a witty but no insubstantial essay making prominent use of these techniques. The piano part is first among equals in an ensemble of clarinet, trumpet, trombone, viola and double bass.

Shatner's Bassoon was composed at the request of Endymion to celebrate the ensemble's 30th anniversary, and first performed at Kings Place, London, on 5 June 2009. It will feature on a forthcoming CD on the NMC label, to include a selection of new works written for the occasion.

Northcott, Bayan: Doubles All Round Ref: AC241

For six players (Flute/Piccolo, Clarinet in A/Bass Clarinet, Horn in F, Piano, Violin, Cello)

Score and Parts
[PDF Sample]

Seventy next year, Bayan Northcott is a leading writer about music, and a composer who has particularly focused on variation forms - hence the 'doubles' of this new work ('doubles' being an alternative term for variations, as found for example in Bach); and hence, in celebratory mode, 'doubles all round' as the title for this sparkling pièce d'occasion composed at the request of Endymion to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Doubles All Round would indeed make an ideal five-minute introduction to a new-music concert, or a fascinating contemporary excursus in a classical programme that featured the line up of flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, horn, violin, cello and piano. The work is launched by a vigorous keyboard prelude, which returns after the third double in a brief cadenza, before the piece is rounded off by the fourth double, quasi una coda.

Bayan Northcott's collected critical writings, The Way We Listen Now, were published by Plumbago Books in 2009.
