There can be few more delightful presents than a piece of music. Even so,when Margaret Agnes Calkin, friend of the youthful Harold Darke, received In the Bleak Midwinter as a gift from the composer one Edwardian Christmas long ago, could she ever have guessed that a century later this delightful carol-anthem would be sung throughout the world, and even be voted 'the greatest Christmas carol of all time' by The BBC Music Magazine?

Though published in 1911, the autograph score bears the date of completion as 9 December 1909, and to mark the centenary of this remarkable setting of Christina Rossetti's immortal words, Stainer & Bell are pleased to publish a a version for TTBB and organ made by a master of contemporary choral music, John Rutter.

Like the version for SSA already available, this new arrangement for men's voices stays true to the much-loved original for SATB and organ, while making it available for the enjoyment of male-voice choirs. With John Rutter's transcription of the organ part for string orchestra, there are now more ways than ever to include the work in Christmas programmes, as well as other vintage choral items by Darke from the same period, including The Shepherds had an Angel, and the Three Carols for SATB: Love came down at Christmas, Cradle Hymn and A Christmas Carmen, also published by Stainer & Bell.

[PDF Sample]

The three carols in this new collection date from the early years of the twentieth century, but they have a perennial freshness that is typical of Darke's other enduring choral works, such as the much-loved carol In the bleak midwinter. They may be sung equally effectively as individual items, or together as a short anthology of seasonal music. A solo voice or unison singing would be equally effective in Cradle Hymn, which offers a refreshingly unfamiliar tune to time-honoured words. A Christmas Carmen makes for a rousing conclusion with a seasonal message of goodwill.

A carol in the manner of Delius
SATB unaccompanied
[PDF Sample]

Though Frederick Delius was in no sense a man of traditional religious beliefs, the distinguished composer and organist Derek Healey has imagined the sound of a Christmas carol he might have written, and given us Sleep, Holy Babe!, a delightful unaccompanied SATB setting of Edward Caswall's classic hymn.

The result will delight all lovers of Delius's music, and not least those who wish to add a dash of his unique style to this year's Christmas festivities. A slow and expressive lullaby, Sleep, Holy Babe! adds a different nuance to each of the four verses, reflecting their changing moods. In turn, sopranos, tenors, basses and altos have solo roles, and together create a richly Delian sonority that stays well within the technical range of an average choir.

The Capriol Carol is a magical union of the treasured early English lyric 'This enders night' and the haunting tune of the 'Pieds-en-l'air' from Peter Warlock's much-loved Capriol Suite.

Church choirs comfortable with part-singing will find it easily within their grasp, but it will be no less effective when performed by larger choral groups. A simple yet telling organ part adds to the effect of this delightful new setting, which deserves a permanent place in the Advent and Christmas repertoire.

Included in the Oxford Book of Ballads and ascribed to an anonymous 15th-century author, the tale of Joly Joly Wat the shepherd who offers the infant Christ his 'pipe, skirt, tarbox and scripe' is among the best-loved of traditional Christmas verses. Its musical reference offers an obvious attraction to composers, and in Bryan Kelly's new setting a sprightly ritornello embellished with trills is the musical counterpart to the young herdsman's musical instrument on which 'he made such joy.'

Written for Simon Williams and the Harrow Choral Society, Joly Joly Wat brings a fresh and lively note to seasonal choral concerts. The vocal writing is clear and straightforward, with occasional division of the sopranos, and an incisive and syncopated style that matches the shepherd-boy's haste to leave his flock and his faithful dog keeping his 'shepe fro ye corn' in order to visit the new-born Jesus.

Bryan Kelly's choral music has enriched the repertoire of many choirs, who will be delighted by his latest carol Summer in Winter. The words, a prophetic text by the 17th-century Metaphysical poet Richard Crashaw, may also be used as a prayer within the Anglican Christmas liturgy.

A calm and reflective cradle song for SATB and organ, this charming piece moves strophically through quiet dissonances and shifting colours of major and minor chords to a softly radiant conclusion. Written for James Lancelot and the choir of Durham Cathedral, it will create a haven of musical repose within a sacred space, whether used as an anthem within Advent or Christmas services, or in a concert of seasonal music.
