Scott, Derek: Stone on Stone
Ref: W188
Full score including text.
SATB, B and T soli, speakers and organ.
Words by Timothy Dudley-Smith.
Stone on Stone
is a cantata for two soloists, choir and organ and just about anyone else who can join in. Timothy Dudley-Smith dramatizes the theme of the Trinity through a confrontation between the builders of a great church and groups of sceptical bystanders. The music, by former Muppet-Show MD Derek Scott, is continuous, and packed with good tunes. A 'Searcher of the Soul' (soprano or tenor) and a 'Watcher of the Heavens' (bass) meditate on the inner meaning of events. Different viewpoints are reconciled in the final affirmation 'A Trinity of Love who reigns alone', sung congregationally. Available in vocal score and separate melody edition, this highly accessible piece is guaranteed success whether performed by small groups or a massed gathering of singers.

Simper, Caleb: Five Anthems for the Liturgical Year
Ref: D85
SATB and organ
[PDF Sample]
Caleb Simper (1857-1942) was for many years amongst the most performed of living composers by virtue of his anthems and services, which were 'sung throughout the civilised world'. To complement his ever popular voluntaries for the church year (still available from Stainer & Bell), five of his anthems are here reissued in a new edition by Simper's biographer, Christopher Turner. Material for the Advent, Christmas, Easter, Whitsun and Harvest festivals, dedications and general use is included. Easy and enjoyable to sing, the music should win new admirers for the work of this eminent musical Victorian.
The anthems included are:
He shall reign forever
;
I will feed my flock
;
If we believe that Jesus died
;
O how amiable
;
The Lord is in his holy temple
.

Stanford, Charles V: Benedictus and Agnus Dei in B flat
Ref: W208
SATB and organ
The Benedictus and Agnus Dei in B flat is published as part of an ongoing policy to reissue works by Charles Villiers Stanford in the Autograph Edition, in new engravings but as the composer wrote and approved them, with no editing from another hand. Simple in texture but highly effective in performance, these two short movements are a useful addition to the repertoire of music available for a traditional celebration of Holy Communion, and would suit a small church choir with two or three voices per part.
Price:
£2.00
Stanford, Charles V: Benedictus and Agnus Dei in F
Ref: W207
SATB and organ
Charles Villiers Stanford's Benedictus and Agnus Dei in F are suitable for single-voiced choirs, and the organ, too, has a simple pedal part that makes it highly appropriate for small churches with limited musical resources. The work is published as part of an ongoing policy to reissue works by this composer in the Autograph Edition, in new engravings but as the composer wrote and approved them, with no editing from another hand.

Stanford, Charles V: Coronation Gloria in B flat
Ref: W227
SATB and organ
The
Gloria in Excelsis
was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music, for Elgar's Coronation March and Parry's grand festival
Te Deum
were also heard for the first time that day. In addition, there was music by Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer, as well as by the Master of the King's Music and organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, Sir Walter Parratt.
The
Gloria in Excelsis
was published the following year as part of Stanford's Opus 128, the
Festal Communion Service
for voices and orchestra, which was also made available with the accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However, such was the popularity of the
Gloria
, a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford's genius for church music, that it soon became popular as a separate piece, either with organ or orchestral accompaniment, and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.
Orchestral material is available on hire from the publishers. The work is scored for double woodwind, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, organ and strings.

Stanford's
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F
was written in 1872, while the composer was a choral and organ scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge. Though early in date, the work already shows his remarkable talent for composition and his gift for writing large-scale choral music. Edited by Ralph Woodward, a latter-day organ scholar of Stanford's old college, the setting is entitled
The Queens' Service
to distinguish it from the more well-known service in the same key. The work has been recorded by Queens' College Chapel Choir on Mirabilis Records (MMSCD4).
