Anthony Cæsar finds a moving text by the teenage Etonian, Oxford Movement influenced, Digby Mackworth Dolben (1848-1867), who died tragically young while swimming. Canon Cæsar’s anthem is a classic example of the Franciscan principle (observed by lamentably few composers) of true beauty springing from simplicity.

The text inspires a sort of post-Howells harmonic idiom, though with the choir’s part kept remarkably simple. The most inspired moment comes when the opening progression, which sets the poignant tension of the first three verses, is subtly transformed into radiant certainty in the last verse: I asked for Thee- / And Thou didst come / To take me home / Within Thy Heart to be. Although the parts divide at times, this miniature classic is not too difficult for any wellrehearsed four-part choir.

The tune OASIS by Brian T. This attractive and versatile short setting of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei, by one of the UK's leading choral conductors and composers, is ideally practical for both Anglican and Roman Catholic sung eucharist. It can be performed 'a cappella' or with organ accompaniment by a small amateur or professional choir with occasional divisions, and will be no less welcome repertoire for annual patronal celebrations, where appropriate.

Written for the Highgate Choral Society in 2002, the 'Missa San Marco' received a memorable performance the following year in St Mark's Basilica, Venice, hence the title. No less suited to more modest liturgical venues, it has also been successful as a concert item. In 2007 it was performed unaccompanied at the Wigmore Hall, and in May 2008 it will be heard at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank, with the organ part arranged by the composer for orchestra. Score and parts are available on hire from the publisher, and are fully compatible with the vocal score.

For the celebrations of HM the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, Peter Cutts, composer of 'Bridegroom', has written an anthem version of Fred Pratt Green's much loved Hymn for the Nation, set to 'Vision' by Walford Davies. Widely heard in 1977 as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, 'It is God who holds the nations in the hollow of his hand' is now available in this new arrangement which has been specially written with the varying performance needs of modern church choirs in mind.

The music of Dering forms a lively commentary on the complex artistic interchange between England and the continent in the early seventeenth century, and the picture is extended with this collection of small-scale settings of Latin texts with continuo accompaniment. Performed both in the chapel of Queen Henrietta Maria and in the residential quarters of Oliver Cromwell, these pieces were clearly much in demand for intimate devotional observances. Motets from printed and manuscript sources are included, as well as incomplete works plausibly attributed to the composer.
