 | Mathias, William: An Admonition to Rulers, Op. 43 Ref: W200
SATB and organ. Written for the choirs of Chichester, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals, An Admonition to Rulers was composed shortly before Mathias's choral masterpiece, This Worlde's Joie, but has remained unpublished until now. Its powerful text from Wisdom 6 and 7, clothed in the composer's colouful , dramatic music, make it an ideal choice of anthem for Remembrance Sunday, or any occasion when justice, order, and the role of those who govern are the focus of worship. | Morley, Thomas: Collected Motets. 4, 5 and 6 voices Ref: B558
Transcribed and edited by H K Andrews and Thurston Dart. Revised by John Morehen.
In contrast to the light, Italianate manner of his madrigals, Morley's motets show the composer absorbing the influence of Byrd and of earlier English sources. They include some of his earliest known music, such as Domine, Dominus noster and Domine, non est exaltatum cor meum, both for five voices, and the Latin and English texted four-voice carol Nolo mortem peccatoris, cast in the unadorned anthem mould of Tallis and Tye. The four motets from A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music are also included in this volume. Price: £16.50
